About
Trần Đình UY
Software engineer
Việt NamEst. 2024
I'm a software architect focused on high-performance systems, automation, and the digital experiences in between.
Whether debugging a JVM issue, refining automation pipelines, or training for a marathon, I believe in shared knowledge and well-documented systems.
Manifesto
“Most engineering writing online is either sales copy or a tutorial. I want this to be the third thing — careful, opinionated, and useful five years from now.”
Currently
Writing engineering essays, building Manul X, and exploring system-design problems in public.
What you'll find here
Long-form essays on systems and tooling. Postmortems with the timeline still intact. Notes on the boring parts of shipping software — migrations, observability, dependency budgets. Occasional Vietnamese and Japanese translations of pieces I think more people should read.
What you won't find here
Listicles. Tool-of-the-week posts. AI-generated rewrites of someone else's article. Anything I haven't tested or wouldn't recommend to a friend on call at 3am.

Influences
Writers and books that shaped how I think.
- Dan Luu — writing on hiring, latency, and what actually breaks in prod
- Julia Evans — for proving that approachable can mean rigorous
- Simon Willison — for showing what it looks like to think in public
- Hillel Wayne — for taking formal methods seriously without being precious
- Designing Data-Intensive Applications — Martin Kleppmann's quietly definitive book
Colophon
Built with Next.js on Postgres and Drizzle. Self-hosted via Docker. Set in Fraunces, Inter Tight, and JetBrains Mono. Source is open on GitHub — every commit, every revision.
