By comparing per-minute HTTP traffic during matches against a four-week median baseline, the team quantified how live sports yank entire countries online — or pull them off.
Kickoff time is the dominant variable
The single biggest factor shaping traffic deviation is match timing. Matches played between midnight and 8 a.m. local time produce the largest spikes — fans awake when they'd normally be asleep push traffic to more than double the baseline. Conversely, matches during daytime working hours barely register: the audience was already online. The effect is symmetric: a match in the evening can cause traffic to drop to 70% of normal as people put down devices to watch.
