Cortex DRIVE: A Framework for Engineering Health in the AI Era
Cortex introduces DRIVE, a five-pillar framework to measure and improve engineering organizational health as AI accelerates software delivery.

Cortex, the internal developer portal company, has released DRIVE—a framework designed to assess engineering organizational health in the age of AI. Co-founder and CTO Ganesh Datta positions it as the missing control layer for teams where AI is accelerating output faster than traditional governance can keep up.
Why DRIVE exists
The argument is straightforward: AI is automating more of the software development lifecycle, shifting engineers from writing code to designing and operating the systems that produce software. That shift moves the hardest questions into the operational layer. Existing frameworks measure individual or team productivity, but they don't answer whether the organization as a whole can sustainably turn customer needs into reliable software. DRIVE is meant to fill that gap.
The five pillars
DRIVE stands for Delivery, Reliability, Initiatives, Vigilance, and Efficiency. Each pillar comes with a focused question and a short list of critical metrics.
Delivery
“Are we shipping fast and is it sustainable?” AI has removed the constraint on writing code, but every other bottleneck in the SDLC remains. This pillar measures deploy frequency, lead time for changes, and on-call pager volume—tracking both structural and human capacity to sustain high performance.
Reliability
“Are we delivering on our promises to customers?” AI makes it easier to write automated tests that give a false sense of confidence. DRIVE grounds reliability in the customer's experience, tracking functional SLO status and Sev0/Sev1 incident count.
Initiatives
“Are our org-wide engineering investments making progress?” As AI changes how teams operate, org-wide initiatives become more critical. Metrics include Tier 1 initiative milestone completion rate and operational excellence action item completion rate.
Vigilance
“Are we actively defending our systems and managing our acceptable risk?” AI code generation is introducing vulnerabilities faster than ever. DRIVE tracks open critical and high fixable CVEs, assets below the compliance bar, and orphaned assets.
Efficiency
“Are we allocating resources to the right problems?” With token spend climbing fast, DRIVE tracks cloud spend versus budget, internal AI/LLM token costs, and the percentage of capacity spent on innovation versus maintenance.
