Half of Hacker News Is Now AI — and It's Getting Worse

Hacker News has always been a bellwether for what geeks care about. In 2018, it was crypto. Now, it's AI — and the shift is more than anecdotal. A new analysis by Michal Zalewski (lcamtuf) quantifies just how much of the front page is AI-related, and the numbers are stark: as of June 2026, roughly 50% of daily top stories are about AI or generated by AI, up from 40% in February.

The author took two systematic samples. In February 2026, he looked at the daily top 5 stories for the entire month. AI took four out of five spots on Feb 4 and Feb 12, and arguably the entire lineup on Feb 5 (including a submarine marketing piece for an AI vendor). Only three days had no AI in the top 5.

For the second part of the experiment, he used Pangram, an LLM-generated text detector, to estimate how many stories were AI-written. The author defends such detectors against the usual skepticism, arguing that the default voice of current LLMs is quasi-deterministic — ask for the same essay twice and you get stylistically similar results. He manually reviewed the flagged stories and found the results plausible, with a few false negatives.

In June, the methodology was refined to distinguish between pure-play AI navel-gazing (vendor announcements, op-eds) and stories that lean heavily on AI but have broader ramifications (like the Instagram AI support agent account hack). The first half of the month saw ~60% of the daily lineup AI-related, tapering to ~50% by month's end.

The trend is clear: AI is not just a topic on Hacker News; it's becoming the topic. For a site that prides itself on intellectual diversity, that's a concerning trajectory.
