NotebookLM Rebranded to Gemini Notebook, Gains Cloud Compute

Google has renamed NotebookLM to Gemini Notebook. The product remains a standalone research tool, but it now gets deeper integration across Google's ecosystem — including the Gemini app and Google Search — and a significant under-the-hood upgrade: a secure cloud computer for each notebook.

Cloud Computer for Native Code Execution

The headline technical change is that every notebook now gets a secure cloud computer. This lets Gemini Notebook write and execute code natively, enabling complex data analysis grounded in the user's sources. For working engineers, this means you can run Python snippets, perform statistical modeling, or generate visualizations directly inside your research notebook without exporting data to a separate environment.

The feature is rolling out first to Google AI Ultra users and Workspace business customers with AI Ultra Access and AI Expanded Access. Pro users on the web will get it over the coming weeks. Google says this upgrade will enable entirely new output formats and deeper analysis — not just text summaries but interactive, code-backed results.

Cross-App Syncing and Search Integration

Notebooks can already be accessed and created within the Gemini app, with full cross-app syncing between the app and the standalone Gemini Notebook experience. Soon, notebooks will also surface directly inside AI Mode in Search. This effectively turns Gemini Notebook into a persistent, source-grounded research layer that follows you across Google's product surface.

Since its launch as Project Tailwind at Google I/O 2023, NotebookLM has attracted over 30 million users and 600,000 organizations. The rebranding signals Google's intent to fold its experimental AI research tools more tightly into the Gemini brand while keeping the product focused on research and analysis — not general-purpose chat.

For developers and power users, the addition of a cloud computer is the most interesting part. It moves Gemini Notebook from a passive Q&A tool to an active analysis platform. If Google executes well on the code execution layer, this could become a legitimate competitor to tools like Jupyter notebooks with AI copilots, but with the advantage of being source-grounded and integrated into Google's ecosystem.
