Dwarf Fortress's Myth and Magic Update Rewrites the Universe's Cosmology
Bay12's upcoming Myth and Magic update for Dwarf Fortress promises procedural magic systems that reach into the fundamental cosmology of each generated world, making every fortress's magical research feel like genuine discovery.

Dwarf Fortress, the famously simulation-heavy colony builder, is getting a Myth and Magic update that aims to make every other fantasy game's spellcraft look trivial. Tarn Adams, co-founder of Bay12, describes it as procedural systems that go beyond combining spell effects, reaching "straight to the fundamental cosmological makeup of the universe." The result: "magical situations that you cannot get any other way."
The update, arriving later this year, will generate distinct species of wizardry and witchcraft during world generation, alongside rivers, mountains, and the fates of civilizations. This is a major leap from the game's current, relatively threadbare magic system. Adams says fortresses will be able to pursue magical research that "really feels like discovery," encompassing magic materials, enchantments, rituals, and ruins—plus spells that just "blow things up." The trailer shows a goblin-shredding hex that also shifts stone, all tied into "how that particular universe works down to its bones."
This is a feature Bay12 has been working on for years. Dwarf Fortress is already intense and elaborate without procedural thaumaturgy; the Steam edition has made it more approachable, but the underlying complexity has only grown. The update promises to add yet another layer of emergent chaos to a game already known for its unforgiving simulation.
