SpaceX has filed an application with the FCC to deploy up to 100,000 Gen3 Starlink satellites in very low Earth orbit. If approved, the constellation would dwarf the current ~11,000-satellite fleet and deliver a claimed 100-fold increase in total bandwidth — multi-gigabit symmetrical speeds with latency under 20ms.

The Gen3 satellites weigh over 2,000 kg each, meaning Falcon 9 can't launch them in meaningful numbers. Musk has indicated Starship will be needed; Falcon Heavy may serve as a bridge until Starship is operational.

Spectrum grab and AI ambitions

The filing requests access to an unusually broad range of spectrum: Ku, Ka, V, E, W, and D bands, with uplinks up to ~275 GHz. SpaceX is asking for waivers to assemble larger contiguous channels for high-capacity fronthaul, backhaul, and massive uplink. The company explicitly ties Gen3 to serving "billions of AI-powered devices worldwide," positioning the constellation as infrastructure for distributed AI compute and data transport — not quite a data center in space, but a step in that direction.

SpaceX promises to operate on a noninterference basis and engage in "good-faith coordination" with incumbents, but the sheer scale of the spectrum request will inevitably draw pushback from rival satellite operators and federal users.

Competition and pricing

Starlink's current top residential plan runs $130/month with real-world speeds around 145-170 Mbps down and ~40 Mbps up. Gen3 will require upgraded user terminals and antennas, and pricing is expected to jump to $200-300/month. Competitors like Amazon's Project Kuiper (now Leo) are only beginning customer trials, Eutelsat-OneWeb remains business-focused, and legacy GEO players Hughesnet and Viasat are fading — Hughesnet has even struck a referral deal with SpaceX. Starlink effectively has no serious consumer rival.

Regulatory and astronomy concerns

The FCC's Space Bureau will open a public comment period; approval is not guaranteed. Conditions around debris mitigation, spectrum coordination, and interference protections are likely. Astronomers are already protesting: a recent European Southern Observatory study warns that large constellations like Starlink would have "devastating effects on astronomy."

If the FCC signs off on even a substantial fraction of the 100,000-satellite request, Gen3 would redefine satellite broadband — and cement Starlink as the default choice for anyone outside fiber range.
